Sleep apnea is a common and potentially life-threatening sleeping disorder that happens when your regular breathing is interrupted during sleep. Snoring is common among patients with sleep apnea but not all snorers have sleep apnea.
What should I do to get treatment for my Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
What should I do to get treatment for my Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
To effectively address your obstructive sleep apnea issue, you may need to undergo either a Level 1 PSG study with an ENT specialist or a Level 3 Sleep Study using a home monitoring device to determine the specific condition and manage it accordingly.
Only after a proper diagnosis is obtained can the dentist help you choose the most effective device in preventing your tongue from blocking the air passage. These dental devices are easy to wear and are gentle, and are a good alternative to patients who want to avoid surgery.
Prolonged sleep apnea without seeking treatment could lead to a number of health problems including high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure, irregular heartbeat and heart attack, diabetes, depression and more.
What oral devices are available for treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)?
Here are some common oral appliances used in dental sleep medicine:
1. Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs): These devices reposition the lower jaw forward to help prevent airway obstruction during sleep.
2. Tongue Retaining Devices (TRDs): These devices hold the tongue in a forward position to keep the airway open and prevent snoring or sleep apnea.
3. Hybrid Oral Appliances: These devices combine features of both MADs and TRDs to provide a customized solution for individual patients based on their specific needs. It’s important to consult with a dentist or sleep specialist to determine the most suitable device for your condition.
